Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Elks Lodge was officially purchased by McMenamins with the addition of the adjacent annex building in July 2012.

The property will include 44 guestrooms with private baths; space for live music, events, weddings and meetings; a ballroom transformed into hotel rooms with terrace views of Puget Sound; three restaurants; a McMenamins brewery; and on-site gardens that will provide the restaurants with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

September 18, 2017- We are pleased to announced that we have received sufficient commitments from investors to proceed with redeveloping the historic Tacoma Elks Temple building. Additional investment opportunities available for a short time. See details here. Construction will begin in October with the goal of opening McMenamins Elks Lodge in early 2019.

A Little History
The Elks Temple was built in 1915-16 when fraternal organizations were an important part of the community and had the money to build beautiful buildings such as this one. It was designed by É. Frère Champney, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, in the second Renaissance Revival style.

Adjacent to the building is a stairway called the “Spanish Steps” that winds up the hillside adjacent to the building. These steps, modeled after the Scalinata di Spagna in Rome, were rehabilitated in 2011 by a grant from WSDOT and the Federal Highway Transportation Enhancements program.

Tacoma Elks Lodge: McMenamins Work in Progress

While it may appear that goats were the industrious workers transforming this property, we now have contractors onsite to further our plans. We aim to preserve, salvage, restore and reimagine this stately six-floor property. The end result, slated to debut in 2019, will include hotel rooms, restaurants, a brewery, bars, gardens and good times.

It’s a monumental task; the Elks Lodge sat empty for more than 20 years. It had its fair share of temporary guests, some of whom had creative whims with cans of spray paint. Artists are echoing these graffiti sentiments in the custom pieces being designed for the space. In the same vein, damaged and neglected woodwork and molding is being replicated in the spirit of the Elks’ original works. Plans also hint at the fun to be expected: private event space, a game room, a secret bar, a music venue with restored stage, and a tropical bar. The roof is being restored to its original shape – so you can look forward to raising the roof, so to speak!
