SAM HOWARD
Sam Howard is a bass player and composer who loves making good music of all kinds. Originally from Wyoming, he has traveled the country playing and learning.
He began playing classical double bass and electric bass at the age of 12. Sam attended the Frost Conservatory at the University of Miami where he played in many top groups, including the Bop Brothers, Studio Big Band, and the Downbeat award winning Dave Racine Trio, a group which Sam co-founded. He also performed and toured extensively with the original funk/rock/fusion group Active Ingredients. While in Miami he gained much valuable playing experience and studied with great teachers including bassist Chuck Bergeron and composer Ron Miller.
Sam moved to New York City in 2004 where he began actively composing for his own group and performing with a variety of great players. Along with guitarist Woody Quinn and drummer Russ Kleiner, he began developing the music which forms the 2007 release "Out Tonight." Sam gained much valuable experience in NYC and is glad to have been a part of the vibrant music scene.
Since relocating to Portland, Sam is continuing to focus on composition and playing great music. He has been blessed to play with such great musicians as Alan Jones, The Blue Cranes, Heather Masse, Aoife O'Donovan, Darrell Grant, Ben Darwish, Andrew Oliver, Reggie Watts, Devin Phillips, Trio Subtonic, Idit Schner, The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble and many others.
