Located at Edgefield

During WWI, the county built a detention center for women, called the Cedars. It often housed women of a questionable reputation and occasionally women would escape at night. Here are three such ladies, emerging from crawling under the fence to escape.

This 4'x6' panel is located in the east stairwell of Edgefield. It celebrates some of the music which is performed on the grounds near the Red Shed, in the warmer months. Pictured from top left and going clockwise in the corners are, Lex Browning from the Freak Mountain Ramblers, King Perkoff, Jessie Sparrow, and Turtle Van Demarr, also of the Freak Mountain Ramblers. Sitting on a barrel in front of the shed is a skeleton, playing a flute. A reminder of the timeless character of music which endures long after individual musicians are gone, and a reference to the Grateful Dead.

The Stoffer Family Thanksgiving In the 1950s and 60s, Del Stoffer was the manager of the grounds and the farm at Edgefield. He and his wife Maxine lived on the grounds, in Janus House and raised their three sons there. Here they are gathered , together with in-laws, for the traditional feast, circa 1957.

"Frog goes a'Courtin"

This is one of the first whimsical doors I painted at Edgefield. The black rabbit has always been a part of the lore of Edgefield and there are lots of frogs whose chorus is loud in the early spring.

"The Cosmic Juggler"

She is controlling the phases of the moon, and her face is shining with a radiant joy. Located at the Crystal Ballroom.

"The Big Green Topiary Cow"

Sheer whimsy, this refers to the cattle and dairy cows formerly raised on the grounds of the Masonic Retirement Home, now the Grand Lodge.

"The Bird Whistler"

Ethel Gaymen Thompson had been in vaudeville before her retirement. Her specialty, bird calls and whistles. Here she is surrounded by birds attracted by her calls.

"The Big Eye"

This is a recurrent motif in much Masonic imagery. Here it is casting judgment on one of the very first managers of the retirement home and is being witnessed by an early resident who was not happy with the manager's performance. Located at the Grand Lodge.

"Giant Our Lady of Guadalupe Candle"

Here the candle serves as a beacon of light to the surrounding countryside. This is also a nod to the Hispanic population of Forest Grove.

"Three Japanese Students"

Done with a soft Oriental landscape background, these portraits depict three Japanese students who traveled to Forrest Grove to attend college in the 1870's.

"Earl Curtis, Musician"

McMinnville is the site of a well documented UFO sighting in 1950. Here is an alien life form, masquerading as the pianist sometime in the 50's or 60's.

"The Gemini Twins"

An astrological portrait of hotel founder, Tom White's twin grandsons, Pierre and Walter.

"The Flying Wine Bottles"

Soaring above Hotel Oregon like a flock of cranes, they highlight the surrounding wine country.

"The Boiler Doors"

These are the somewhat personified doors to the old heating unit at Kennedy School.

"The Phoenix"

This panel was painted specifically for the opening of the Boiler Room bar at Kennedy School. Viewed from the bottom up, the phoenix is rising up from the ashes of the nearly derelict school building. On either side of the bird are the cooks and brewers, above them are cigar smoking diners and revelers. Continuing onward and upward are references to the many musicians who have performed here at Kennedy. Included are Leroy Vinnegar, Mel Brown, Craig Carrothers, Jon Koonce, members of Vagabond Opera, Foghorn String Band, Stolen Sweets, and the Bagpiper, who occupies an almost ritualistic role in so many Mc Festivals.

"The Art of Teaching"

When I was in school more than one teacher would remind us students that we had to work to really grasp information, that our heads didn't just open up and magically absorb the teacher's wisdom and knowledge. I formed a strong visual image of exactly that, of information just drifting into the pupils opened heads, straight from the teacher's lecture.

"The Olympic Club"

This is an imaginary advertisement, featuring all the comforts and enjoyments offered by this hotel, bar, pool hall, and restaurant, and more. Loggers and miners could come into Centralia and spend the weekend and their paychecks here.

"The Celestial Pool Game"

Turn of the century pool players in a heavenly game at the Olympic Club.

The Other Side of the Street. Back in the day, decent women were advised to cross the street if they had to pass by the Olympic Club. Otherwise they may find themselves the victims of unwanted and crude advances.

"Mary, Queen of Scots"

Apparently, Mary was an avid golfer. She may even have coined the word "Caddy". Imagine playing golf in that clothing.

"The Headless Horseman"

One of the regulars at the Sand Trap would dress up as the Headless Horseman every Halloween and ride through the town.

"The Merman"

Since this is at the Lighthouse Pub, and the ocean is nearby, I used manager Eric Feuerborn, as a model for this merman, who is holding a brewer's paddle. I added a beard to his visage, and the disguise was complete.
