About “Political Corruption in Oregon, 1868-1902: Sen. John H. Mitchell and Other Tales of Wrongdoing”

Content

John H. Mitchell was an adulterer, bigamist, wife abuser, liar, bribe-taker, and imposter. He abandoned his young wife and two children in Pennsylvania and fled to Oregon via San Francisco (where he abandoned his mistress). Once in Oregon, Mitchell went on to serve 22 controversy-riddled years as one of the state's U.S. Senators. Despite his wide-spread notoriety and long tenure in office, Mitchell has largely been forgotten by history.
