About A Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) Records Showcase Presented by Dan Duval

PJCE Records is a grassroots record label documenting the wide array of original creative music from Portland, Oregon.  We encourage collaboration and experimentation between musicians from Portland's thriving jazz and improvised music community and release albums from established and emerging ensembles.  Musicians benefit from a streamlined process and impressive cost to quality ratio, and audiences celebrate the availability of this unique regional music which has been unavailable until now.  PJCE Records is a branch of the non-profit presenting agency Portland Jazz Composers' Ensemble.

Kin Trio

Sunjae Lee - saxophones
Andre St. James - bass
Tim DuRoche - drums

A unique brand of minimalist bebop from a generation-spanning trio. Sunjae's music is as informed by his studies of natural medicine and meditation as it is by his impressive bebop chops and knowledge of the jazz canon.  Kin Trio's debut album "Breathe" was released on PJCE Records in March 2013 - the third release on the label.

Richards / Duval Quartet

Graham Richards - piano
Dan Duval - guitar
Bill Athens - bass
Stephen Pancerev - drums

New quartet by longtime collaborators Duval and Richards, featuring a notable Portland based rhythm section.  This will be a CD release show for the groups debut album, "Indian Summer," available on PJCE Records February 15th - continuing the labels second year of monthly releases.  Richards and Duval have many years of history playing music together in California and Boston, but this is their first studio album of original jazz explorations.  Graham received a double major from Berklee College of music in film scoring and jazz composition and a masters in jazz piano performance from North Texas and currently lives in the Bay Area.

Barra Brown Quintet

Tom Barber - trumpet
Nicole Glover - saxophones
Adam Brock - guitar
Jon Lakey - bass
Barra Brown - drums

Barra's debut album was released to positive reviews on August 15th on PJCE Records. He has assembled a group including New York City transplant and trumpet virtuoso Tom Barber as well as several younger players he has worked with in the Alan Jones Academy of Music and in his ongoing band, "Wishermen."  Barra's compositions blend indie rock and jazz sensitivities, tempered by his background in classical flute and folk rock.

Nationally and regionally supported as a cultural tourism initiative in celebration of Black History Month, Portland Jazz Festival is dedicated to preserving America’s indigenous art form by presenting internationally recognized jazz masters alongside local jazz musicians. A series of jazz education and outreach programs that extend into Portland’s schools and neighborhoods is at the heart of the annual event.
