About “Booze, Bootleggers, and Bad Deeds: Mayor Clara Larsson and Prohibition in Troutdale”

Troutdale was East Multnomah County's wettest town prior to Prohibition with as many as six saloons operating there. All of that changed when women got the vote in Oregon. The city first elected a female mayor and the following year voted for “local option,” closing down the town's saloons.

Sharon Nesbit tells the story of the mayor who got thrown in the county jail, the pretty woman who took his job, the determined woman who shut down the saloons, and the city's lapse into clandestine drinking and bootlegging.
