2010 Syrah
Chukar Ridge Vineyard, Columbia Valley, WA
Bottle, to go: $26.75 - Case price: $288.90
Even in a relatively cool vintage like 2010, Syrah from Chukar Ridge displays all of the strength and depth of flavor we would normally only expect from a warmer vintage. This is largely due to the unique growing conditions at this vineyard site where steady Gorge winds help thicken the skins of the maturing fruit. Come harvest the winds gently dry out the grapes, further concentrating flavors. Aged in ~20% new oak barrels this dark, concentrated wine displays ripe fruit aromas of blackberry, dark cherry cola and blueberry along with pepper, sweet oak and vanilla. The fruit suggested by the nose carries through to the palate, with big cherry and cassis flavors culminating in a long, full finish.

2010 Primitivo
Lonesome Springs Ranch, Columbia Valley
Bottle, to go: $26.75 - Case price: $288.90
Primitivo is so closely associated to Zinfandel that in most respects it is referred to as a clone of Zinfandel rather than a distinct varietal. DNA fingerprinting revealed that most American Zinfandel is genetically equivalent to the Croatian grape Crljenak Kaštelanski, and also the Primitivo variety traditionally grown in Puglia (the "heel" of Italy). Primitivo (Primero, 1st,) refers to particular Zinfandel vines that ripen earlier than other clones of Zinfandel and are less susceptible to infection and rot. In a cool vintage such as 2010 these earlier ripening Zinfandel clones fared much better and developed the classic flavors we normally associate with Zinfandel; deep cherry, cassis and a hint of black pepper and clove spiciness. This is one of our lighter bodied reds right now so it should fall just after Pinot Noir and before Cuvee in tasting and weight order.

Sweet Dessert Wine, OR
Bottle, to go: $22 - Case price: $237.60
Made from 100% Zinfandel grapes, this ruby ‘Port-style' wine was made in the traditional method by fortifying the wine during fermentation, producing a wine with both elevated alcohol and high sugar levels. It has familiar Zinfandel aromas of dried cherries and blueberries in addition to stewed fruit aromas and flavors of plum and fig, complemented by notes of brown sugar, spice and black tea. Enjoy with spiced-based desserts, like fruit cake or pumpkin pie.
