Ales On Tap
Sleepy Hollow Nut Brown
Time has slipped by again and we are confronted with a myriad of changes in the season of autumn. It’s the time of year to start savoring the potion of your choice to warm the bones and soothe the soul. And one can’t think of anything better than the McMenamins classic seasonal brew, Sleepy Hollow Nut Brown. This longtime favorite has a chestnut color and medium body that will cast an otherworldly spell over you. The complex malt character, well balanced with Chinook and US Golding hops, will have you walking in a continual reverie. Legend has it that Ichabod Crane downed a few Nut Brown Ales listening to local ghost tales and scary legends at the Van Tassel merry-making party before his fateful trip home. Be watchful and clear-headed on your way home lest you begin to grow fanciful, see shapes and shadows in the night and hear things in the howling wind. It may just be your imagination running away with you or it very well may be the Headless Horseman on his fire-breathing black stallion following you!

Matchbook Smoked Ale
The matchbook is a dark, complex Ale. Smoke and heavy malt character are the main characters in this show. Just 5 pounds of smoked malt is added to the total of 400 pounds of grain. Although it sounds like a very little amount, smoked malt is an extremely brooding malt, taking over the flavor profile if over used. Crystal and roast malts give the Matchbook a nutty quality as well. Lightly hopped, the Matchbook is a malt lover’s beer.

The McWeizen is a traditional German hefeweizen (yeast wheat) style of ale. Weihenstephan yeast gives this beer flavors of fresh banana and spicy clove. German pale wheat malt makes up the base malt to provide the malty back bone of the brew. Lightly hopped, it’s the German wheat malt and Weihenstephan yeast that is the star of this show.

This McMenamins classic has taken on a transformation out here on the Westside. This is a stronger more full flavored interpretation of the original. This version is more of an English style Pale. The Munich and Vienna malt provide a slightly toasted malt character, while the Tettnanger and Sterling hops add spice and floral qualities. This beer finishes smooth with just a touch of sweetness.

The Oak Hills Brewpub in Northwest Portland is home to one of McMenamins favorite creations, Rhino Stout. In 1992 pub manager Troy Dockins approached brewery general manager Keith Mackie and made the suggestion that although customers truly enjoyed Terminator Stout®, with its robust flavor and full-body, a beer that was lighter and drier, but with the rich roasted character of Stout would be wonderful to try. Keith agreed and set to work designing a beer that was not as full-bodied as the big semi-sweet Terminator Stout®, yet not as light as a dry stout. Rhino Stout is the result of this design. Crafted with just enough pale malt to give the brew substance, and just enough dark malt to render a pronounced coffee and roast character, Rhino Stout is happy medium in the Stout-lovers world. Produced in very limited quantities at various McMenamins breweries throughout the nineties, both brewers and customers of McMenamins have enjoyed Rhino Stout whenever and wherever it poured.
